Rainwater system design: gutter types, falls, and bracket support spacing

Sizing gutters by roof area, setting falls, and bracket spacing intervals under BS EN 12056.

Rainwater drainage systems capture run-off water from roofs and discharge it safely into surface water drains or soakaways, protecting the building's fabric. Under C&G Unit 208 and Approved Document H Section 2, systems must be sized and installed correctly:

Gutter Profiles

  • Half-Round: The most common domestic profile, ideal for small to medium roofs.
  • Square-Line: Offers higher flow capacity and matches modern fascia aesthetics.
  • Deep-Flow: Has a semi-elliptical shape, providing maximum flow capacity for larger roofs or steep pitches.

Setting Falls (Gradients)

While gutters can sometimes be installed level, setting a fall towards the outlet (downpipe) prevents water pooling, silt accumulation, and sagging.

  • Standard Fall: The recommended minimum fall for domestic half-round gutters is 1 in 600 (approx 1.7 mm per metre).
  • Gutters with a fall have a higher flow capacity than gutters installed completely level.

Gutter Bracket Support Spacing

To prevent gutters sagging when full of water, snow, or debris, brackets must be spaced correctly:

  • Maximum Spacing (Plastic/PVC): Gutter brackets must be spaced at intervals not exceeding 1.0 metre (or 900 mm under specific manufacturer guides).
  • Fittings: Additional brackets should be installed within 150 mm of any gutter angles, unions, or running outlets to support joint weight.
  • Downpipe Clips: Downpipes must be supported by pipe clips spaced at intervals not exceeding 2.0 metres vertically.

Roof Area and Flow Capacity

The size of the gutter and downpipe required is determined by the effective roof area ($A_e$), which takes into account the wind-driven rain factor: $$A_e = L \times \left( W + \frac{H}{2} \right)$$ where $L$ is roof length, $W$ is horizontal width, and $H$ is vertical height to the ridge.

*Original revision guidance; confirm gutter spacing and calculations against BS EN 12056-3 and Approved Document H.*
