- Qualification-led route: in the UK, plumbing competence is shown through recognised qualifications and assessment rather than one government exam.
- Level 2: the core entry layer of plumbing and domestic heating knowledge and skills, typically the first full qualification a learner works towards.
- Level 3: a higher layer that builds on Level 2 with more complex systems, fault finding and design awareness.
- Apprenticeship: a route that combines paid on-the-job work with structured off-the-job study towards a qualification.
- Awarding body: an organisation that designs qualifications and issues certificates, for example City & Guilds or LCL.
- Training provider / centre: a college or private provider that delivers and assesses the learning.
- NVQ / competence qualification: a work-based qualification that assesses real, on-site competence rather than only classroom knowledge.
