Hot water with a heat pump

How a heat pump heats stored water, the Legionella point, and the role of the immersion.

A heat pump supplying an indirectly heated hot-water cylinder needs a heat exchanger matched to its output and operating temperatures. A large coil can transfer the required heat with a smaller temperature difference. Other hot-water heat-pump designs have different heat exchangers, so identify the arrangement before applying a cylinder rule.

Check capacity and recovery together. Coil performance, primary flow, heat-source output, storage volume and the draw-off pattern determine whether the installation can meet demand. An existing cylinder is suitable only if its performance and compatibility meet the design. Its age alone does not establish that it must be replaced.

Water hygiene remains a design requirement. Where normal storage is below the specified thermal-cycle temperature, the system may use a scheduled heat-up cycle. Set its temperature, duration and frequency to the installed system’s hygiene regime and manufacturer instructions. Verify that the required heat treatment is achieved: programming a cycle does not prove it completed, and one sensor reading does not establish the condition of every part of the water system.

Supplementary heating has several legitimate uses. An immersion or other supplementary heater may support a hygiene cycle, a recovery requirement or a configured operating mode. Daily operation alone does not prove a fault. If its use is unexpected, compare the controls, demand, permitted operating conditions and measured performance with the design before diagnosing a failure or changing the schedule.

Protect the outlet separately. Preserve the required storage and distribution hygiene controls, then use suitable outlet temperature protection where the scald assessment requires it. Check the blend temperature and the valve’s safety response during commissioning and maintenance.
