A symptom rarely proves that a particular component needs replacing. These scenarios ask you to use observations, system knowledge and safe working decisions to narrow down a fault before acting.
Heating and hot-water symptoms
Water supply and flow problems
Component behaviour and system checks
Safe investigation and escalation
Turn symptoms into useful checks
List what is known, what is assumed and what information is missing. A useful next check helps distinguish possible causes. Practise explaining why your chosen check adds more information than simply replacing a component.
Use your understanding of the normal supply, circulation and control sequence to interpret a symptom. If you cannot explain what should happen, revise that system before trying to diagnose why it is behaving differently.
Some scenarios test judgement about the work itself. Practise identifying when a request goes beyond your competence, what needs explaining and when another qualified person is needed. A convenient shortcut is not evidence of a suitable solution.
List what the question actually tells you. Then ask which check would distinguish the remaining causes, and whether anything makes it unsafe to continue. Read why the other choices fail: that is often the most useful part of a diagnostic question.
Test your plumbing fault finding
The timed diagnostic practice test uses this same free set. Treat the score as a prompt for further revision, and return to the relevant system notes when a scenario exposes a gap.
The free test offers 5, 10 or 25 questions from this same set, with an optional practice timer. In Test mode, answers and explanations appear after you finish. Repeated tests reuse this bank, so a higher score can reflect familiarity.
How is a diagnostic question different from a theory question?
A theory question can ask what a component does. A diagnostic scenario asks you to use that knowledge with symptoms and observations, often to choose the most useful next check. The explanation matters because several causes can initially seem plausible.
Can I use these questions to diagnose a fault in my home?
These are learning scenarios with deliberately limited information. An actual fault needs checks on the real installation by someone competent for the work. Use the scenarios to develop your reasoning, not as instructions to carry out an unfamiliar repair.
Which plumbing topics should I revise before fault finding?
Start with water supply routes, heating circulation, hot-water controls and safe working. If a scenario exposes a gap, return to the relevant system notes before answering more questions on the same fault.
Identify the assumption that led you towards it. Write one sentence explaining which observation supports the better answer, and one explaining what still needs checking. This is more useful than memorising the position of the correct option.
What is free, and what does Premium add?
All 25 questions on this page are free, with no account or card required. They are selected from the maintained Plumbing fault finding question bank. Premium opens the full bank of 120 questions, more modules and Weak-Spot Review.
A free account saves the answers you give while signed in and lets you continue across devices. Without an account, this browser can remember your place for 30 days; it does not transfer earlier guest answers into an account. Signing up keeps the same free question allowance.
