BS 7671 assessments range across the whole standard, but the questions that decide results cluster in a few places. These original questions mix definitions, protective measures, device selection, cable factors and verification: read the condition in the question before choosing the figure or the rule.
Shock protection is the spine. Separate basic protection, fault protection and additional protection, then tie each to the system type in front of you. A TT installation relies on its own electrode and an RCD; a PME supply combines neutral and earth in the network and needs larger main bonding. Explain why the disconnection time or bonding size in a question follows from that arrangement.
18th Edition notesPractise the coordination chain from design current to device rating to cable capacity, and the factors that shrink a cable’s capacity: grouping, ambient temperature and thermal insulation. For RCDs, match the device type to the residual current it must detect rather than to the circuit name.
Cable and device notesKnow the dead-test order and the test voltage and minimum value for insulation resistance, then the documents each activity produces. Bathroom zones come up constantly because the boundaries are geometric and easy to test: work outwards from zone 0, noting which IP rating, supply and accessories each zone permits.
Bath and shower zonesA mock is a diagnostic, not a score to collect. Sit it once cold to find the gaps, then work the gaps, then sit it again. Repeating the same set until the number goes up mostly measures familiarity with the questions.
Because the real assessment is open-book, practise with the book. Time how long it takes to locate a regulation. For a figure such as a disconnection time or a conductor size, note which system type, circuit rating or installation condition the question states, and if it turns on a table, find the table rather than trusting memory: amendments move values.
Read the explanation on the questions you got right as well. A right answer for the wrong reason fails the next variant of the same question. After a mistake, read the matching note, then try the question again on another day.
