Choose your card route first, then the HS&E test it accepts. CITB offers Operatives, Specialist, and Managers and Professionals tests. You can book online, but you attend a test venue. Check the exact test, your identification and any support you need before paying.
A practice score tells you what to revise. Booking needs a different check: will this test support the card you actually need? Work through the decisions below, then keep the confirmation with your test-day plan.
Identify the card and issuing scheme first
Use your occupation and exact qualification to find the appropriate card. CSCS Card Finder helps identify the card and required test; trades covered by a partner scheme need that issuer’s requirements. A job advert asking for a “CSCS card” may need clarification from the employer.
- Write down the work you will do and your training stage: labourer, apprentice, qualified trade, supervisor or manager.
- Check the full title of your qualification against the card requirements, including any accepted alternative or exemption.
- Record the required test type and, for a Specialist test, its exact specialism. Use those details when booking and choosing revision materials.
Operatives, Specialist or Managers and Professionals?
These names describe different content. Confirm the accepted test for your card instead of choosing whichever sounds most advanced.

Can you take the CITB HS&E test online at home?
Online booking and online revision are available, but the CITB test is taken at a Pearson Professional Centre or an approved Internet Test Centre. An Internet Test Centre is a physical venue you attend; its name does not mean a home appointment.
JIB-PMES offers a separate test with live online invigilation for eligible plumbing and mechanical-services operative cards. That home test does not cover its Supervisor or Manager cards. Check the card route and equipment requirements before choosing it.
Book the test and check the confirmation
The standard CITB HS&E test fee is £23.50, checked in September 2026. Start from CITB’s booking page for Pearson VUE appointments, or contact an approved Internet Test Centre. Check what any quoted total includes before paying.
- Have your personal email address, UK postal address and payment method ready. Use your existing CITB registration number if you have one.
- Select the test you confirmed for your card, then a centre and appointment you can attend.
- Check that the candidate’s name matches the ID they will present. Read the booking conditions before paying.
- Save the confirmation and check the name, test, venue, date, time and agreed support. Contact the booking service promptly if anything is wrong.
Check identification before test day
CITB normally requires valid original ID matching the booking name. A passport or UK or European photocard driving licence can be primary ID. The policy also accepts an eVisa through the UKVI View and Prove process; this has different signature and digital-document rules.
If you cannot provide primary ID, check the permitted combination from the two secondary-ID lists. Do not assume that a photograph of a document or any two cards will qualify. Name changes, exceptional ID waivers and candidates under 16 have additional requirements.
Resolve uncertainty with the testing service before travelling. Arrive at least 15 minutes early with your booking confirmation and the accepted ID. Missing the ID requirements can mean losing both the appointment and its fee.
Arrange any support when booking
Available voiceovers and other support depend on the test. A voiceover does not translate the on-screen text, which remains in English. Some options can be selected online; readers, interpreters and other arrangements may need the Adjustments team.
Give the team your test type, preferred centre, requested support and any relevant evidence. Allow time for the arrangement and check it appears on the confirmation. Check physical access to the venue as well.
If your plans change or you need another attempt
For Pearson VUE bookings, allow at least 72 hours before the appointment to reschedule or cancel. Online changes are free; an eligible online cancellation receives a full refund unless payment was by voucher. Telephone changes cost £5, and telephone cancellations deduct £10. Check the terms that apply to your booking.
After a failed test, you must wait at least 48 hours before sitting another attempt. Use the areas identified on the score report to plan your revision before booking and paying again. Keep the report after a pass too, then complete the separate card application with the required evidence.

Does passing the HS&E test automatically give me a CSCS card?
No. The card application is separate and depends on its qualification, training and test requirements. Confirm the route before paying for a test.
Is a Specialist test the same for every trade?
No. The specialist subject is selected as part of the test. Confirm the exact option required by your card issuer, then use revision materials for that option.
Can free practice questions replace the booked test?
No. Use practice to identify gaps and understand the reasoning. A practice result is not a test pass certificate or proof of card eligibility.
